About Adolescent / Dating Violence

Stats and Facts:


• Incidence of adolescent dating violence ranges from 10 - 35%
• Victimization and perpetration of dating violence is equally prevalent in males and females
• Dating violence is associated with greater levels of substance abuse, violence, victimization, and lower academic achievement
• Dating victims have a pattern of exposure to and participation in a range of high-risk behaviors. Dating violence is not normally an isolated event
• Adolescents typically do not seek help for dating violence

Risk Factors:

• Cultural and attitudinal
- Patriarchal attitudes
- Peer-group acceptance
- Control needs
- Traditional views or beliefs about sex roles
• Childhood socialization that includes child victimization or maltreatment
• For males, exposure to partner abuse
• Early sexual behavior
• Tobacco, alcohol and drug use


Implications:


Injury or death

Posttraumatic stress disorder

Lowered self-esteem

Sexual Dysfunction

Fear and anxiety

Poor health-related quality of life

Social adjustment problems

Reduced life satisfaction

For girls in particular, unhealthy weight-control behaviors, sexually transmitted diseases, and suicidal ideation
